We brainstormed a bit on the idea on possibilities to try to track down his laptop, but we hit wall mainly because we did not prepare for this. Fortunately he uses Dropbox to backup his important data and research / thesis stuff. Unfortunately his hard-drive is not encrypted so if the thief is savvy enough he could easily read data from the hard drive.
